Dog and cats aren't the only pets looking for forever homes during Clear the Shelters. The Equine Rescue League is hoping some of their four-hoofed animals will be adopted into loving families.
Pat Rogers, who founded the Lovettsville, Virginia-based organization nearly 30 years ago, was moved to act after seeing more than 300 cases of severe abuse and neglect in a year while working with humane officers investigating horse auctions.
"Old, sick and crippled horses in severe pain were loaded on slaughter trucks facing a long and painful journey or death by trampling when they could no longer stand," Rogers wrote on Facebook.
Equine Rescue League rehabilitates and re-homes horses, donkeys, ponies and mules of all ages.
They currently have 29 animals at their shelter, and all of them are looking for a home. Here's a look at some of the horses that are available for adoption.
